Neon lighting is understood through the concepts of quantum mechanics. The atomsof neon gas inside the tube are bombarded by energetic electrons, produced by runningan electric current through the gas in the tube at high voltage. The electron-atom collisions excite electrons in the neon atom to higherenergy levels, from which they fall back down. As they do so, they emit light atcertain colors characteristic of the gas in the tube.
